A Young Man Decides to See His Family Physician About His Depression and His Problem Drinking

By emily

Larry finally made up his mind to go and see his family physician about his problem drinking.  At first, Larry thought he would be able to simply go online, look for some straightforward alcohol info, and establish whether or not he was addicted to alcohol.  Not surprisingly, he discovered quite a few websites that cataloged some of the common alcoholism symptoms.  That’s the good news.  The less than positive news, unfortunately, was that Larry showed signs of a number of these alcoholism symptoms.

Alcohol Addiction Symptoms: Some Illustrations

As a case in point, Larry was drinking substantially more than normal and he was starting to have more passionate disagreements with the woman he was dating.  Moreover, for the first time in his young life he was encountering sleeping issues.  Likewise, Larry repeatedly felt depressed and on an increasing basis he had been demonstrating less than normal attention to detail while on his job.

In the same way, he felt highly stressed and more on edge on a regular basis and for the past several months he had shown evidence of cloudy thinking at work. Given that Larry manifested all of these symptoms, he was rightly concerned about his problem drinking.

So Larry at long last made up his mind to call his doctor and schedule an appointment.  As a matter of fact, this was somewhat demanding for Larry because his physician was also his parents’ family healthcare practitioner.  The springboard for his discomfort was this: at the risk of embarrassing his family, he had to go and make known his reckless and excessive drinking behavior to his healthcare professional.

When Larry arrived at the physician’s office, he explicitly told the healthcare practitioner about the consternation he had about his excessive drinking behavior. When the doctor asked what was bringing about this concern, Larry stated that he had gone on the Internet and read about alcohol dependency and especially about alcoholism symptoms.  He then articulated all of the alcohol dependency symptoms that he undoubtedly thought he manifested.

A Complete Physical Assessment and Outpatient Alcohol Rehabilitation

The healthcare professional notified Larry that it was intelligent of him to address his problem drinking, he gave Larry an exhaustive physical exam, and recommended that he enter into an out-patient alcohol treatment facility that was run by one of his doctor partners.

Furthermore, when Larry mentioned that he had been feeling a sense of melancholy more regularly, the family physician told Larry that alcoholism and depression often take place in the same individual.  For that reason, the doctor also suggested that Larry seek counseling to tackle his depression.

The Advantage of Coming To Grips With Your Drinking Difficulties

The physician made it a point to notify Larry that he might not necessarily be addicted to alcohol, but that he was plainly drinking in an abusive manner.  The healthcare professional then told Larry that the reason he recommended alcohol treatment in the first place was because he wanted him to face up to his drinking problems, make sure that he prevented them from intensifying, and start to live in a more healthy manner, even if it meant that he had to thoroughly refrain from drinking.

Everything considered, by effectively treating his drinking difficulties, Larry would be able to get his drinking issues under control and abstain from the negative sequence of events that could potentially lead to alcohol addiction.

Undeniably, Larry did not want to face the thought of getting admitted into an alcohol treatment center. Nor was he ecstatic about going to a counselor about his melancholy.  In spite of these apprehensions, nevertheless, Larry in actual fact felt some psychological relief for the first time in many months because he eventually stopped making excuses for himself and at long last made up his mind to do something affirmative about his drinking activities.
