If You Are A Beginner: Yoga Essentials
ByIf you are new to Hatha Yoga, looking for a Yoga For Beginners DVD, or just trying to get your bearings as a beginner yoga student, it can seem especially challenging to figure out what is going on due to all the technical jargon (based on the Sanskrit language) such as Asanas, Hatha, Bikram, Prayanas, etc. Many of these were originally spelled out in an ancient text called the Hatha Yoga Prapidaka. Not exactly light reading for the beginner yoga enthusiast!
One of the best ways to get started with Hatha yoga is to dry a Hatha Yoga for beginners DVD (you can rent from your local library or video store if you're really not sure yoga is for you...) or try a yoga class at a nearby yoga studio.
Beginner Yoga Student To Advanced Hatha Yoga Practioner - FAST!
If you want to get started fast and shed your beginner status once at for all, you can even try a Hatha yoga holiday at a retreat center for your next vacation!
For the rest of us, regular classes can do almost as well, although they aren't as exotic or all-encompassing (mind and body wise) as a multi-day yoga holiday... hmm... maybe for Christmas!
Some of the yoga classes you look at may be designed for those with great physicality and others might be designed as Hatha yoga classes for beginners. Hatha yoga classes for beginners are designed to give the students the basic poses and techniques without pushing them to the extremes that more advanced classes will. The Hatha yoga for beginners will often modify the poses so that the special needs of the students can be addressed, such as back problems, knee issues or lack of flexibility. There are many students who are wary when attending the Hatha yoga class in the beginning, not being familiar with the various poses and techniques. However, a good instructor makes all the difference in making beginner yoga students feel comfortable and enjoy the experience. After all - they want you to come back!
Look Out Beginner! Yoga Classes Mean Work!
Although you might think of yoga as a peaceful and meditative pursuit with magical health benefits, Hatha yoga means "power yoga" and it is designed to get you working hard!
The Hatha yoga class for beginners helps to increase the flexibility and strength of those that attend. The poses that are in the class are designed to help individuals build strength by holding their own body weight in the various positions. This can be very difficult, especially when beginning because the body is not used to carrying its own weight except when upright on two feet. During the Hatha yoga class for beginners, the students learn to hold their own weight in balancing positions, upside down position, and in positions that use both their hands and their feet to hold them. In this way, the entire body is conditioned through the class and the person becomes stronger.
The Hatha yoga for beginners also increases the flexibility of the students since the various poses are held with the legs outstretched or the body in seemingly contorted positions that require this flexibility. Increasing the flexibility of the body means that the students become more open in their passageways and the tense muscles and knots that were formerly there are worked out. The blood flow of the body is also increased so that individuals that formerly had problems with limbs falling asleep often do not have that problem after attending a Hatha yoga class for beginners regularly for a period of time. The relaxation methods taught in the class also help with the overall well being of the individuals in the class, since they are taught to relax all the muscles of the body except for the ones that are being used to hold a pose.
So, you can see that your new hatha yoga practice has the potential to be very challenging! As a beginner, take it easy on yourself and work at your own pace. Consistency over the long term is much more important than overnight success. Get a good Yoga for beginners DVD (or several) to keep you motivated for the days when your time or budget doesn't allow you to attend a yoga class. And remember, life is a journey so enjoy your yoga each day.
